HOW TO GROW AND CARE FOR TOBACCO SEEDLINGS

  1. Plant a seedling in a large, spacious pot in order for the root system to be healthy and strong. At home, it is optimal to use a seedling box.
  2. Plant a seedling in sandy loam soil, which has a good nutrient holding capacity, warms up quickly, prevents moisture better and dries out more slowly, and it is easy to process. The soil must be well drained. Initially, fertilizers in sufficient amounts need to be added so that the plants become strong and develop a strong root system. The best are those used for tomatoes, potatoes, and peppers.
  3. The ideal tobacco growing temperature is considered to be between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius. The plants prefer sunny, well-ventilated areas.
  4. Water the tobacco seedlings daily, but be careful to avoid water stagnation. After the plant has grown a little, watering can be limited to 3 times a week. Avoid excessive moisture. The soil must be looked after and loosened to facilitate moisture penetration to the root.
  5. It is recommended to add fertilizers and top dressing several times during flowering.

During flowering, break off the tobacco inflorescences in order to obtain thicker stems and leaves.

  6. When the tobacco leaf begins to turn yellow, then it’s time to harvest it. Tobacco leaves mature from bottom to top, so remove the leaves starting from the lower level.

The plant is ready for harvesting 3-4 months after transplanting.

  7. Harvested tobacco goes through certain stages. Read more in «Post-Harvest Tobacco Processing. Curing and Fermentation».
